About the Course
You’ve always wanted to write a sit-com! Now’s the time. In this course, each student begins with nothing and ends up with a script for the first episode of an original sitcom. It’s hard work. And a good amount of writing. But we’ll go through it together.
We’ll analyze existing sitcoms and learn what are the common elements in effective, dynamic ones.
We’ll explore how to generate ideas and what makes a good sit-com premise.
We’ll do exercises to come up with dynamic characters.
We’ll lay out the story beats that show off your show’s characters and premise in the most engaging, exciting way.
Students will end up with a completed outline, and the first act (first third) of the script for their TV show. The course culminates in a “student show” – which will be a reading of excerpts from everyone’s script in front of supportive family and friends (however, no one is forced to share their work if they’d prefer not to).Please note, students should be prepared to write and read scripts outside of class.
